Any more to the story line would be a spoiler alert. There comes a point where Jane, Ben Tribal Police chief and some deputies go to this drill site. In 1970s Los Angeles, a mismatched pair of private eyes investigate a missing girl and the mysterious death of a porn star. I remember reading somewhere that ‘Olsen and Renner have no chemistry. As a math savant uncooks the books for a new client, the Treasury Department closes in on his activities, and the body count starts to rise.
It’s another nearflawless effort from a climbing Hollywood star screenwriter. And that’s interesting, because it’s definitely got a lot of truth behind it. Und ich gebe die Hoffnung auch nicht auf, dass mich mal wieder so ein richtiger “Knaller-Film” im Thriller-Genre begeistern wird. Meh, it passed the time.
I should start off by saying that I thought that this was a very good movie. Actually, considering the subject matter, everyone in Wind River deserves a gold star AND a cookie. If it seems to move slowly, that’s because we’re supposed to be paying attention to the dialogue and piecing things together.
But that’s not what they do, they just force in a shootout when you least expect it simply because the movie has no more time left. Their Sun Dance lodge is flanked by two American flags and at powwow the veterans are the first ones out dancing. Sam Littlefeather as Tokala Clifford. Cory is still going through that process of learning to deal with it and facing the pain head-on. It is solid on so many levels that overall you are left feeling like you have been sitting in the snow for a few hours with only your underpants on.
In my humble opinion – Elizabeth Olsen does not play the main character – Jeremy Renner does. Taylor Sheridan is an excellent screenwriter but here directs a barely average effort that, despite River solid performance, fails to be cohesive enough and offer compelling motivations for Olsen’s character, who is mostly wasted and Wind have that much to do in all this.
Teaming up with Lambert as a guide, the duo soon find that their lives are in danger while trying to solve the mystery of the teen’s death. Every character you come into contact with seems to be infected with the shear icy desolation of the place. You can’t help but be overwhelmed by the beautiful but chilling backdrop to the whole story line. That worked fine but it should not be necessary for this type of film. Before long, Cory will inevitably have to face his own past, while at the same time, both he and Jane are thirsting to see justice done.
Now, these people are certainly very detestable, to be sure, but I felt that the movie could have gotten a bit more mileage out of this. Which is a shame, because Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen are fantastic here and the supporting cast is also top-notch.
If anything, 2017 hope this film will remind Americans that we have issues in our own backyard that are being completely ignored. Or even keeping basic stats, so people know the real number. East of Boulder Flats, deep into the vast and unforgiving white territory of the Wind River Indian Reservation, the seasoned game tracker, Cory Lambert, discovers the frozen body of the young Native American, Natalie.
In many ways, Elizabeth Olsen performs here like Jodie Foster’s Clarice Starling where at some points you kinda know that Olsen’s character may be out of her elements, but at the same time that factor actually gives her a good vantage point. Just below that it reads “Ticket Confirmation :” followed by a 10-digit number. We had problems with the sound quality, but overall an excellent movie. Eher unauffällig kommt dieser Film daher kann aber absolut überzeugen, ab Halbzeit hat der Film sein höchstes Niveau.
You let things simmer before, eventually, they blow over. Not bad, the plot is good and the acting is believable. Cory says something that I found interesting, he says that Natalie’s father, Martin, needs to face the pain or else he’ll pretty much erase every memory of her.
He was just wildly inconsistent. Maybe he’s good at other types River roles, but he absolutely sucked here. Renner’s, on the other hand, has a very emotional backstory – which is particularly relevant to the story’s conflict, characters, etc. You certainly come to hate him for his actions, but what I mean when I say he’s not effective is that the actor playing this character, James Jordan, honestly isn’t that good.

When people talk about about the sleeper hits of 2017, movies River people overlooked in favor other, bigger flicks, this one gets brought up often. Having said that, let’s move on to the narrative, shall we?

And the fact that it’s set in a very cold harsh environment just adds to the film’s chilling effect. As a director, I consider this somewhat of a practice round. So, of course, they’re gonna ignore the plight of Native women, because it doesn’t make them feel good about their past, as if their concerns should be the primary ones. It also brings up, in a title card at the end, that there are no missing-person statistics kept for Native Indian women, while they are kept for every other demographic, so the real number of missing Native women remains unknown.
